Some a little less, some a little more, than one inch wide. Can be used for crafting, feeding squirrels, or for planting Burr Oak tree seedlings. If nut falls out of shell and you are going to use it for crafting, you may put a drop of glue in the bottom and glue it back in. These will be kept in the refrigerator to keep fresh and if planted in the fall they will emerge in the spring. If wanting to plant trees, remove shell and plant the nut in the ground an inch deep in the fall and in end of May they should emerge. In zone 4, It is usually the end of May, even the month of June before the tiny plants show up. If planting in the spring, the nuts will need a 3 month cold refrigerator time before planting, to break the dormant cycle, or they may not grow. It is important to not skip this step if planting them in the spring. If you receive nuts with an end that is split, the seed is trying to grow, and this is a good thing if you are wanting to plant trees with these. There are extra nuts in each package in case you are not planting trees and want to use them for decoration or crafts. [Do not fall for that float test! It is a myth.
